The thin layer protects the moving parts from normal wear and tear like shooting and handling. It’s hydrophobic so water doesn’t like it too much, and sand is right up there as well. Application: How it's done

Some formulas air-cure, but most firearm coatings need oven-curing, which is why we use full-sized, industry-grade ovens to achieve a hardened, long-lasting finish.
